For information on how to release the liability of your donated vehicle, please refer to the New Jersey MVC web site.
You must surrender your license plates to the MVC before you can cancel the insurance on your vehicle. Failure to do so may result in continued billing by your insurance company.
Donate Car for Charity suggests you cancel your insurance after the vehicle has been picked up as if the car is parked on the street and has it's plates removed it may be towed by the city.
The New Jersey MVC requires that you remove your license plates and surrender them to any MVC Agency or Regional Service Center, unless you will be transferring your plates to another vehicle which you own.
License plates cannot be transferred to another owner.
